Nutritional Yeast (Variety)
Nutritional yeast has been around for quite some time, originally called by “brewers yeast” because it was used to raise bread, brew beer, and make wine and alcoholic drinks. discovered in the 1950’s by a baking company nutritional yeast has been a staple in the plant-based community for decades , it became popular as a health food in the 1960s. It was labeled as a meat-free source of protein and B vitamins, and was popular with those following a diet that was mainly vegan and vegetarian.
I have found nutritional yeast to be some of my the staple ingredient in some of my favorite vegan and vegetarian recipes from vegan nacho cheese sauce, soup bases, and salad dressings, to plain dry rub seasoning. More recently nutritional yeast has had new additions to the flavor family have been added such as Smoke, roasted garlic, and nacho spice that typically combined well with its cheesy, nutty, umami flavor notes.
